Which class do you recommend?

Hello everyone,

since I currently don't enjoy throne and liberty anymore, especially the PvP, which only takes place at night, during certain events and castle sieges, I came across RoR on YouTube.
Today I want to get started with RoR. I'm not very familiar with the classes and need some help from you.
I like the following classes:
Witch Hunter
Shadow Warrior
Witch Elf
Disciple of Kain (can this also be played as a DD?)
Shaman
Squig Herder

What would you recommend and why? I would be very happy about tips for my entry into RoR.

Hello!

I'll make a few statements but note that they mostly apply at T2+ (level 16 and on).

Playing anything melee in large scale is incredibly difficult without support (tanks&healers).

My advice as a new player would be to try ranged first (Squig, Shad, Shaman from your list).

If you are intent on melee, WH/WE are hard to make work in large scale, but stealth allows them to gank reinforcement lines, etc, if that's a playstyle you want.

DoK can be played as DD and it's pretty good right now, but again, play it with supports & an assist DPS for best results as it's melee.

If you want a more relaxing feel without the constant threat of very fast death, I would recommend trying a Tank or Healer first.

Re: Which class do you recommend?

Greetings, and welcome!

I starter RoR like 2 months ago, so take these tips with that in mind

1) Witch Hunter - Witch Elf
I personally started the game with Witch Hunter, it was rough, very rough, but I have enjoyed every moment. The class has no proper warband build. There is 1 build that is recommended for wb gameplay, but its not really a wb build and thats why no organised wb wants a wh and most guilds wont recruit a wh. Still, I have enjoyed the gameplay and the challenges. So, make a WH/WE only, if you are prepared for a lot of solo gameplay, and remember, you are in a disadvantage against pretty much everyone who is lv40 when you are leveling. Which is a problem, as everyone who roams is lv40, so everyone who you will "catch" by themselves, is a fully geared ganker that will destroy you :D

2) Shadow Warrior - Squig Herder
Shadow warrior is easy to recommend. Its a blast to play alone, and it has an aoe build for warbands. So you can solo when you feel like it, and you can join organised wbs and guilds if you feel like it. Its also the ONLY class I have played so far, that doesnt feel absolutely useless when leveling. You actually get kills, you contribute by knocking people down, by silencing them, by killing them. And from what I have understood, Squids are also in a good spot. They have issues related to their pet (pets are bugged atm), but otherwise it seems like a fun class

3) Disciple of Kain (can this also be played as a DD?)
No experience about DoK, but its main purpose is a healer. While it can be played as a DD, from my understanding, thats more reserved for roaming/small groups. All warbands and guilds mainly want you as a healer

4) Shaman
No experience about Shaman, but its a healer with dots, so like a god in Tier1 :D But from what I have observed, its also a strong healer in T4. Seems very popular too, so should be a fine choice if you want to play a healer

What you should choose? Well, whatever you find most interesting. With a healer you will have the easiet job of finding a group for any content, but if you like ranged dps more, then make a ranged dps. Choosing between Shadow Warrior or Squig Herder is mainly a decision between Order vs Destruction, they are not 100% identical classes, but they are each others "mirrors". I personally wouldnt recommend WH/WE, but if you find those the most interesting, then make one! You are gonna be making lots of alt characters anyway, so dont think your first character as the only thing you will be playing for the next year

Other tips
1) Install "Enemy UI" addon. It improves the original WB interface and gives you few helpful tools, like marking. In warbands, you can then "mark" the leader of the wb, which makes it 100x easier to follow the leader in combat
2) Do enough pve, so that you learn the basics, but start doing rvr as soon as possible
3) Theres boosting in rvr, so under lv16 characters will be boosted to lv15 in T1. In T2-4 characters with lv16 or higher will be boosted to max level. This evens out the playing field by quite a lot in rvr
4) Use /ad in game if you have any questions. Also, at level5 you will be automatically placed in your factions community guild
5) Few useful guides:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11ev ... it?tab=t.0
6) Join the official discord, its much much more active than these forums
7) Join a proper guild, makes the game easier and much more enjoyable :D

I see you don't have any tanks in your list of classes, but I would probably recommend playing a tank.

Tanks are always wanted in groups, especially full tank-spec. Both PvP and PvE

Tanks have great survivability, which means you stay alive longer, so you can learn the game better.

Tanks can spec 2h for DPS when you want to change things up, and can be a lot of fun.

If you really don't wanna play a tank (and thats fine!), I would probably recommend shaman or squig herder from your list. WH/WE can be difficult in any sort of large scale content, and although they're great for 1v1 / ganking, you'll still have to wait until higher ranks before they come into their own. DoK's are also supposed to be quite hard to play, so may not be best as your first toon. However, they can get really powerful in endgame game, both for healer and damage.

Squig Herder or Shadow Warrior, being ranged DPS, are both somewhat easy to play in large scale fights. You can stand in relative safety and just plink arrows at the enemy. It can be a good way to learn the ebb and flow of PvP in WAR. However, being rdps, you may have trouble getting into groups as there are lots of people playing rdps!

Shaman.....as a healer you'll be wanted, in DPS spec you can be quite powerful, its supposed to be one of the best 1v1 classes. You're basically ranged DPS but with nice self healing! You will be a target: expect to be focused on a lot!

Sw - self reliant, very good st spec, decent aoe spec. It is ofc gear dependant but not as other dps classes. Would recommend sh but not before they fix pet problems which could happens like forever

Tanks job when done good is most demanding and hard one so would not recommend it as first char.

Dps dok is very solid but certainly not pug friendly and very gear dependant so would not recommend it as first character.

Shaman is good pich but if u want to play it dps will face some hate and you need to be heal spec untill you reach some decent dps gear. If u dont mind healing it could work. Dps spec is not wanted for group or wb play so mainly solo, duo stuff
Mostly harmless

Hi,

thank you very much for the answers and your effort to give me tips!

So, I've just tried out a few classes now. My selection has now changed a bit. It's important to me that I can be good solo, play in the BGs and then also be reasonably useful in RvR. My choices now:

- Disciple of Khaine, Shaman and Zealot

Except for heal, can either class deal damage when I solo? So not just heal?

- Squig Herder or Shadow Warrior

Can I play the class with bow, or only melee?

My favorite:

- Witch Hunter

Unfortunately, I read here in the forum and everywhere that the class is good in solo play, but I'm not taken along in the city - whatever that is - and in the big battles. I think that's a great pity.

As a new player I would find it a shame if I chose a class, invested time and then couldn't take part in all the game content. I hope you can understand that. I also assume that a class is not good in all content. I'm not looking for a META TOP DAMAGE class just to be the best. Which I won't be anyway without experience. I've actually always played thieves or archers in ESO, WoW and other games. But RoR is really something special. The classes have really cool identities. The Squiq Herder gets eaten by his pet ;)

I think the three healer classes look really cool.

What do you think? Can you give me some more tips?

- Disciple of Khaine, Shaman and Zealot

Shaman is the best for it. Zealot can do some dmg since it was buffed some time ago, but ain't as good as shaman. Also in general not as good as shaman at kiting opponents. DoK can do some dmg if it gets into melee, problem is class doesn't really has tools to deal with being kited.

I played a bit more yesterday and just now and narrowed down my selection again. WH is out, I trust you!
Three classes are now possible:
SH
SW
Shaman

Purely in terms of looks, I like the SH much better than the SW. Looks are important too, aren't they? So now I have more or less SH or Shaman to choose from.
SW fulfills all the criteria I described. Which of the two classes do you recommend? Which one is easier to play and more popular in groups? I can imagine that the shaman is more likely to find groups as a healer, right? I won't be taken along as a DD. But I've also read that there are so many SH and that they're not always taken along... . I'm not completely averse to the SW either. Where can I find reasonably up-to-date builds?
It all depends. There is an EU server and an N/A server. I didn't quite understand that. I live in Germany and play every day from 4 pm to 8 pm. Can I even find groups during this time?

Squig Herder does look awesome, and yes, looks matter! If you like the look of your character, it will connect you to them more, make you care more, and ultimately help you keep playing for longer!

In general, there is a lot of ranged DPS in the game. Squig Herder (in ranged spec) doesn't have much AoE damage, therefore isn't wanted in warbands. But, it does have a melee spec, which is all about AoE damage. This makes squig herder useful in both dungeons and warbands. As ranged spec, you're good for solo roaming and small group play, good at kiting and with some nice utility.

Shaman as healer is needed for all group content. It's a pretty easy class to play as healer, though perhaps not as strong as zealot or DoK for pure healing. As DPS spec, its a lot of fun (I've spent the last couple of weeks experimenting). You are the kiting king, good ranged damage, and self healing. You won't do as much damage as a proper DPS class, so its unlikely you'll get into dungeons or warbands as DPS spec. But solo or small scale, it's really good!

For up-to-date builds, just check the racial subforums. Classes don't change that much, so the discussion isn't that active, but if u can't find what you need, just create a new thread.

There's only one server. Your playing time is a little bit before the usual server peak but im sure you'll still be able to find groups. I play a lot later so don't know from personal experience, but you should be good.

Forgot to mention: pets are currently in a bad state, for both White Lions and Squig Herders. That may well have an effect on your enjoyment, as squigies get a good amount of their damage from pets. So, if your pet aint doing what u want, it can be painful.

(NB there was an update today (friday 17th) that addressed some pet bugs, so they might be better now)
