Long story short: almost no group support and a crippling class mechanic, that doesn't reward you for anything but is only punishing.

dont fret the SM is a dam good class and get good group support later u can start to heal ur group and shut down most class in combat there a dps hevey tank with lots of seviverbillty with or with out a sheald. don't get down by players that can not see the vale you in the sm hang in there get good at playing that class and you will be hunting down destro solo in no time. sm have lots of utillty to go 2v1 with out a problem and they hit hard ezey to melt tanks dps or healers

I agree, SM is a fun solo class, but OP is asking about group play.

SM is ignored in group play, because of its competition the Ironbreaker and KotBS. IBs and KotBS bring a lot of group utility and buffs/debuffs that the SM doesn't. IB makes a much better melee assist train guard, giving its Oath Buddy major buffs/AP with a great armor debuff. KotBS has good CC with stagger and group buffs with its auras.

It's not that SM is bad, it's just that when picking a group comp it doesn't match up.

SM is worse than any other tank in terms of groupplay so I'd say he's bad in that regard.
Only group comp where he shines is a bombing setup, but that's not really effective in t4 anymore.

All this can change down the line though as blorcs and SMS are definitely going to be buffed down the line
