Is Respect For Your Enemy Gone From MMOs?

I've been really enjoying playing on RoR, but one thing I've noticed, that I didn't expect, is there is an unusually large amount of angry/**** talking people.

I'd say about 30 - 40% of the people I fight, end up messaging me or saying something rude/childish/angry in /say.


Coming from UO/EQ/DAoC, I remember there use to be respect for your opponent. If you got killed, you would respawn, try to figure out what you did wrong and how you could improve. People wouldn't log onto alts to talk ****.

Even on Live Warhammer, I don't remember the degree of **** talking/insults that I've seen here.


How about you, do you think respect is gone from MMOs?
Do you find RoR to be more or less ****-talky, has your experience been different then mine?

But I get it. When I joined RoR I actually though it was nice to be able to see the other realms /say, because it creates some nice RP moments at battle when an Orc yells "WAAAAGH" or a Knight yells "FOR SIGMAR!"!

But now I see more and more trash talk, with a lot of disrespect from both sides that I'm in favor of disabling /say in some way.

I have the opposite experience. Being a Destro player for pretty much all my time in WAR, when i started playing my SM i was expecting a little hate from some order players.

However so far most of order are really nice guys. After a good SC i have been getting tells from random people telling me "thanks for the guard!", "awesome tanking", "SM's are OP!!" and stuff like that. No hate tells from Destro so far but i guess it probly is because most of them know me anyway.

Some people that i used to HATE on WAR are now some of my best friends in game.

What he is most refering to, is what people say in /say chat so the other realm can see it.

Not in my case.

As you probably know, there are weekly Bitterstone events. I'm one the guild leaders (Krumlok, the noisy Orc) who organises the Destro-side resistance against them. (Leading WBs, calling on advice channel and such).

If we get stomped and fail, I congratulate the Bitterstone Leaders (Drengk and Lesti) personally.

But yes, there are some who like to insult people because they got defeated, idiots will be idiots, and idiots are everywhere (including RoR)

From time to time, you find these people, they'll try to be rude, they are a small part of the community yet it's those pesky guys that you'll remember the most, because they left you with a bad impression, of the opposite faction.

I'm sure to be wrong, but i like to think that if they act like this, it is due to the fact they forget that they're playing with the opposite faction, not against.

But overall it's just a mix of frustration and immaturity.

That was just a small example of it and was one of many **** talking episodes last night and every night. My group played a key part in wiping Order off the destro keep before that. During the fight, I got two different whispers, saying things like, "**** sorc", for nuking and killing them.



Your right tho, attacking rats is a perfect example of the modern MMO mindset, on older MMOs, I'd have never thought of attacking rats. Here I feel it's open game because of my experiences from trying to level/powerlvl friends.

I've been jumped many times at rat, which is fine, it's a pvp game in a pvp zone, I fully expect to get attacked. What is weird is after i've been attacked, I've had those people talk ****. lol


In-game, the only time I whisper people is to complement them. For instance last night in SCs, I had a tank sitting on me all SC being a pain, saving their interrupt for doombolts. They saved a couple of their teammates from getting burst down with a timely interrupt. I messaged them after the game and complemented them, because I appreciate good play.

I've noticed myself start to respond, occasionally, back to people in /say, which is something I'd never really do in other games/mmos.

Some guy sent me a tell after a Nordenwatch saying "nice interrupts". Was that you? I was on top of a Sorc all the time using my KD, taunt, punt, everything i could to be an annoyance haha.

When I get bumped on by Dest I always say "Noob", thus I don't really mean it. It's only to agitate them and see if they respond something less friendly.
