I guess we could put a "storing" system like the pets holders (wich currently still dont have function afaik), NPCs that can "store" your linked items into their merchant inventory, then you can "buy" them back when needed.

Dunno how easy it could be implemented, but that's a system wich should be looked at if bank slots are unmodifiable at the time being.
