Thanks for the responses so far. Both from the devs and from the players. I posted this in gen forums because I wanted to hear what players who are not involved with development think about this, so please, chime in.
I hear everybody, with respect to the issue of leaks, possible fragmentation of the WAR community, attracting unwanted attention from GW/EA, etc. These are definitely risks / problems to solve. Just like everybody else, I don't want to see ex-WAR players scattered across the four corners of the earth (again). The community simply isn't large enough to support being split up.
At the same time, the situation needs to be looked at from the standpoint of the prospective developer. I have not been involved in private server development like many people here have, but I am old enough and experienced enough that I lack the patience to be involved with a project where I will have one hand tied behind my back until further notice. I know for a fact I am not the only person with this sentiment.
While I am sympathetic to the concerns raised by the devs and others here, ultimately these concerns are for the dev team (or perhaps max in absentia?) to resolve. It is not my problem to solve, nor should it be. I bring what I bring, and am willing to demonstrate (within reasonable parameters) that I can do what I say I can do.
As far as I can tell, this project, despite having talented people working for it already, really needs additional resources. Failure to address this need over a long enough interval of time is a very serious problem in its own right, and must be weighed against the risks already voiced in this thread. Just some more things to think about.

MaxHayman,
Every developer I have talked to seems to be saying that the limiting factor on getting developers directly involved is you. I understand the concerns you probably have, but I'll tell you what I told nalgol.
As long as things are this way, I'll stick to just playing the game and having fun. Every hour I spend working on out-of-date WarEmu code is an hour I could be doing paid work, so, not going to do that. If things change with the development process and you want someone who is capable of doing work as part of a team on the real system, you know where to find me. Best of luck.

Re: @DEVS: Let me help you. (Not an application)
Bit of advice as I have played quite a few private servers in the past.
Split the project.
Have a team work on the code and another run a server. I understand the feels to keep hold of it all. Take the daoc emu team as an example to follow. Work with the server team and give them access to the newest build and release the previous for anyone to work with. The majority will play the one server anyway particularly if it has the new builds and is communicating with the devs.

Re: @DEVS: Let me help you. (Not an application)
I am not a developer. I wish I was but I know nothing of codes. But I am old enough (too old maybe? hehe) to know that there is a danger of losing WAR, if someone takes a hunk of code and goes and opens up their own server.
Max and company practise solid ethics. No payments or donations accepted, period! EA/GW I am sure know about this project. As long as no money is involved they allow it to go on. (Yes I know all of this was mentioned in a previous reply but hang on.) This is I am sure one of the top worries in Max's head as well as his own life of studies and a future for himself.
So, as slow as it makes things, as weird as the development department is in how it works, all of it has to be like this for security purposes. This project is not just about the developers earning MAx's trust. This is also about Max earning the respect and TRUST of EA/GW.
One little mistake, one bit of code used by someone with no scruples for personal gain and the whole WAR community suffers. But most of all, all the work Max and everyone has done to date will be for nothing.
By working the way Max is working it, he is protecting himself, his fellow developers who are helping him, the project, and all of us players. It is a lot to load on a man's shoulders. On top of his own private life of studies and trying to create a future for himself as an employed person.

When (or if) the restructuring happens, will be community informed (via thread)?DaScoub wrote:To be clear : yes, team need restructuration. We are talking about that in the private section. But, this is mainly Max's project, and he's really with his studies right now, and will be more available soon.

But thusfar Max has been correct on guarding this project? We all remember the people trying to steal the code, or even demanding the code to start their own servers. And, look what they have accomplished in only a year? We had nothing, not even working abilities and 25 people online. Now we already made it to T2, have hundreds online every day and are busy attacking keeps. I find progression is going strong, but that migth just be me.
Just consider how long other EMUs take, like SWG.

You are right. I've seen the progression sky-rocket since joining in November. From less than 50 players to almost capping out at 400 some nights, because people see the potential and progress being made. That being said, it is very clear this team needs more coders, programmers, whatever, working on it. I would love to see equal focus on PvP and PvE for example, but with limited resources the team is rightfully focusing on RvR first.Kragg wrote:But thusfar Max has been correct on guarding this project? SWGEmu team has opened its code to all who wants it, but the original team has years and years of support from a very big and loyal community. I've been there since 2007. Opening up the code is a good thing and speeds up progression but does split the community, mostly between players who have a different vision or ideals as to how the game should be.
Saying that, this community is massive. Every day i see multiple new sign ups in the intro forum. ''Total members 36497''. That is crazy! Some of these could well be bots, however there are thousands of people waiting for the game to reach new milestones before they even download it. Don't forget, this is just T2. The majority of players aren't crazy enough to hop in and play around with it yet like we are. The community is bigger than you think. Pretty exciting stuff.
