In live wasn't lock pick added after a change that reduced the number of guards in keeps?

No, it was in the game since day one. Just need to AoE heal through walls more, or role a WL and pounce onto the keep

Yes, they just lowered the required renown rank at some point (was RR30 at the beginning).
