Are gathering/crafting skills worth picking up?
I'm a new player, and I kinda leveled my Chosen up without picking up anything. From what I've read on the forum the Crafting Skills can be quite buggy. So is it worth going back for skills?

So Talismaking is good? With Salvaging?SpikyBitz wrote:Unless you want to pay through the nose for Talis, yes, imo.

Salvaging is PAINFUL. Scavenging results will let you have mats to make most low-lvl Talis, while Salvaging will grant you access to the better stuff, but I think you still need at least 1 scav toon to get the basics.Dutchpower wrote:So Talismaking is good? Scav is easy. Kill mobs and get stuff.
Salvaging can be leveled to 26 off the bought relics from the Craft vendor, but to get anything good, or to lvl past 26, can only be done off GREEN or higher drops that (IIRC) are not accessories (so no jewelry). You need to use green or higher drops (not quest rewards or vendor-bought gear), which means a LOT of lo-lvl grinding.
Scav, you need to make sure your character is not too high lvl for the Scav drops. After rank 15 toon, IIRC, you basically cannot lvl it if you already haven't started to, as the lo-lvl drops u need are only off lo-lvl toons. I might have that wrong, but seem to recall a GM saying that.

Well I just reached lvl 15. So... Crap. Guess I'll have to make an alt for scavenging.SpikyBitz wrote:Salvaging is PAINFUL. No. . You should still be OK. I recall the GM saying it was OK til 15, but higher was issue (above 15, i.e. 16+). Try hitting the start zone lvl 1-3 mobs and see if you get anything after getting Scav skill.Dutchpower wrote: Well I just reached lvl 15. So... Crap. Guess I'll have to make an alt for scavenging.
(EDIT, because I'm an idiot: you might need to hit lvl 5 mobs. I THINK the undead by the carts in Sorcerer's Axiom area count for this, and some of the PQ mobs are lvl 5. Start w/the lvl 1-3s tho, just to see, as they provide more Crafting-lvl-up chances and less character XP which might accidentally put you to lvl 16, otherwise)
Craft skills can be got in either cap city in the main vendor area, and in the 1st town/camp you travel to after the character start area (Sorcerer's Axiom or Grey Lady Coaching Inn).
I did make Scav farmer alts, tho. One of them I became fond of, and the other I will eventually delete, actually.
Butchering and Apothecary are good for supporting potion-making, as well. Butchering also is a lvl-affected craft skill. Note that Salvaging and Apothecary are not (or at least should not be) char-lvl dependent.

Can't you buy green armor off the AH?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (Usually, anyway) I have a lot of toons so just farm for it. Not sure if RvR-dropepd greens work for it? I actually think that they do, as most of my greens are from RvR drops, and nearly all my greens can be Salv'd.zabis wrote:Can't you buy green armor off the AH?

I'm leveling scav now, so you're right you can still do it at lvl 15. I was using lvl 1-3 mobs. They didn't give much EXP at all fortunately. I'll look for the other mobs.SpikyBitz wrote:No. . Talisman making is fine at any lvl right?

Pretty sure Tali making is fine whenever, tho I have nvr tried it on hilvls. My only real Tali maker started pretty much immediately. I have a second toon w/the skill, but IDK if will bother to lvl Tali 2x.
BTW, when your Scav lvl is 26, you can move to higher lvl mobs, IIRC, to get the 26 - 50 Scav items. Not sure where the line is drawn. I had thought it was every 5 lvls of mob, you get a Scav item lvl increase, but it might be every 3. Not sure.
